Chi-Wei's new room! I hadn't seen Chi-Wei for at least 2 years, so it was great to get together with her after she returned from Japan.
I spotted a guitar in the corner. I asked Chi-Wei to serenade me, and she graciously obliged.
(Windows Media Video, 54secs, 7MB) Chi-Wei plays and sings a bit for me.
(Windows Media Video, 12secs, 1.6MB) Chi-Wei demonstrates her cool side-loading blinky CD/MD player.
Chi-Wei's Japanese Kenwood mini shelf stereo system, with MD and CD capability, and ability to record to and from a PC. And despite its small size, its sound quality was PIMPIN'. HOWEVER! FM radio frequencies in Japan don't go very high, so you can't get American stations with it. DOH!
We headed out to Market Street out by Woodlands Mall, where paying for parking is optional and goes to charity. Whoa.
We randomly chose to lunch at Tommy Bahamas.
Chi-Wei gets ready to dig in to her huge quesadilla.
Me and my "small side" salad. The lump to my right is (was) the goat cheese appetizer. We were determined to finish it despite running out of toast to put it on - we were convinced that the bulk of its worth lay in that there lump.
Chi-Wei and I took a walk along the Market Street "moat" along which the Water Taxi travelled, and saw this cool little bridge.
Along the way, we saw this statue in front of a cool-looking building. I took my shoes off so I could jump across the water from rock to rock to get to it.
Another pose with the statues by the cool-looking building.
Chi-Wei points to the cool-looking building.
The cool-looking building.
Rays of light behind clouds behind the cool-looking building.
We heard a loud THUMP, looked up, and saw a flying duck smash into the mirrored building. It had fallen onto the 2nd floor balcony, so we climbed up the stairs (easily accessible from the outside) to make sure the duck was okay.
The duck was perhaps a little dazed, and didn't try to run away from us.
We then found a bunch of reeds growing nearby and cut one off to use as a soft whip to herd the duck back to the water, afraid he wouldn't be able to get down. A security guard told us ducks smash into the building all the time, and then asked us to leave (it was private property), so we tossed the reed in the trash and left.
Upon leaving, we were accosted by yet another security guard who was much meaner than the first, and wouldn't listen to any explanation we tried to give ("But sir, we were trying to see if the duck was OK" sounded too silly to be true, I guess), saying we couldn't take pictures of the building and that they had seen all of our ultra-heinous activities on video - that we couldn't just go around slashing reeds on private property. Oh well. If he thinks we're spying, reed-killing hooligans, I'm sure it's because we look the part, or something.
Chi-Wei and I hanging out at Market Street.
I ask Chi-Wei to read me a story, and again she graciously obliges. Turns out she knows a lot about children's books. This is her favorite page from
The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales
.
And this is her favorite page from
The Frog Prince, Continued
.
Chi-Wei, books, my stinky feet. Man, I had to really restrain myself from laughing too loudly at B&N. Those books are going to be on my coffee table one day.
And DEN, as if we weren't enjoying ourselves enough already, this random guy came up to us in the mall while we were ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the kitties in the pet store and asked us, "Excuse me, do you know who the Dave Matthews Band is? Do you like them?" Fearing a sales pitch, I reluctantly replied, "Yes ..." "Well, I got these tickets for free from a friend but I have to work tonight and can't go, would you like to have them?" So, we headed off to the DMB concert, but not before getting a pic with random guy. :)
Woodlands Mall is so pimp they have a carousel inside the mall, ON THE 2ND FLOOR.
After getting SOOO lost and having to ask for directions from the two weirdest gas station ladies ever, we finally made it to the Woodlands Pavilion (it's right next to Woodlands Mall, but yeah, we still managed to get lost). Even though they confiscated our munchies and drinks at the door we still managed to maintain smiles.
(Windows Media Video, 28secs, 3.4MB) Clips from the Dave Matthews Band concert. I only knew some of the song "Crash", and that was it ...
And there is Mr. Dave Matthews rocking out.
More Dave Matthews.
Yup, there were tons of people there.
Tons of people, with various types o' smoke floating all around.
We were tired, and realized we were not big fans of DMB, so we went home before the show was over. All in all though, quite a day. Nearly getting arrested for caring about ducks smashing into windows, giggling like schoolgirls at children's books, and getting free tickets from a cute stranger to a concert ... yup, it was a good day. :)
