Say No to UN's Abolishment of Traditional Chinese

Please take a look and sign if you can. The petition's intro is quite thorough and describes how I feel pretty accurately:

In recent decades, China's effort in trying to make Chinese easier for both her youth and foreigners resulted in this push of Simplified Chinese.

Simplified Chinese, although convenient, fails to incorporate meaning into its characters. Many words of same phonetic sounds are replaced by a single character that possesses the same sound but lacks in meaning.

UN's action to "unify" the Chinese characters and recognize ONLY Simplified Chinese will have devastating impact upon the Chinese language, culture, history.

The world is already getting stupider and stupider. Can we try to slow things down a little bit here?

If Starcraft is any guide to go by, all languages except English will eventually get banned by a worldwide government. So we'd better get used to it.

Just from an aesthetic standpoint, the traditional characters usually look better than their simplified counterparts (not that the opinion of a white guy who knows maybe 50 characters matters much).

Ah, but if Firefly is anything to go by, all Chinese people will be reduced to nonspeaking roles, and the non-Asian characters will occasionally spit out Chinese words, but without the tones...

And on a more serious note, I am now shaking my fist in the air in anger. Dang communists and their attempt to simplify (control) written language...

Are we sure this is real? I did a Google, and only found this link. Also I looked on the UN website, and it said nothing.

Donnie: My name looks really ugly in simplified Chinese. But of course, I'm biased ...

Eddy: I probably wouldn't chalk it up to communists abusing power, but rather laziness ...

annie: I'd heard about this before, and there is a Chinese article on it. Hmm. I just tried Googling "abolishing traditional Chinese" and got a bunch of hits.
